11 Best Tips to Keep Your Home Tidy and Organized

1. Declutter any space that you feel is not well organized
Start with the smallest area that is untidy or cluttered, and once you’ve completed the small areas, you can move onto the larger areas that need attention. Most clutter (or else usually in my case) are things that we don’t need that can either be thrown away or donated. Still haven’t went through your mail from the last couple weeks? Be sure to stay on top of that and don’t let papers accumulate, as this will make your home or space look and feel more messy and after letting it accumulate, can make you feel too overwhelmed to pay attention to the mess.
One of my favorite ways to clean and organize clutter is by throwing or giving away anything I haven’t used in the past couple months and making a visit to a home store (homegoods or the container store are my faves) to get some cute but functional organizer baskets. You can place the things you do need in the baskets and group them by category and even add nametags to the baskets to make it easier to find! Some places I love doing this are mine and my kids closets (organization bins and baskets are great for socks, hats, swimsuits, and pretty much anything else you can use them for) and my pantry.
2. Keep your floors swept and clean of debris
This tip might seem like it won’t be possible, but I promise it can be. If you get into the habit of sweeping (or vacuuming, whichever you do) your main floors and areas like the kitvhen and living spaces, even if your home isn’t as tidy as it can be, having a clean floor is a GAME changer. The floors are so important to keep clean when you are striving to have a more tidy and organized home as this is the first thing someone likely notices if it is dirty in your home. My kitchen can be covered in dirty dishes but if my floors are clean of trash and food, somehow the mess seems more manageable!
Every night before I go to bed, I make it a habit to sweep or vacuum my floors no matter how tired I am. If you do the same, trust me when I say that you will thank yourself the following morning!
3. Make your beds every morning
You might think this is a silly tip, but making your bed every day truly does make your home feel more organized. Even if the rest of your room could use some tidying, a bed that is made automatically makes any room look better and more organized. I know how busy mornings can be, especially with little ones, but if you take five extra minutes to spend time making your bed, you will be so happy you did when it’s time to crawl into it when bedtime rolls around!
4. Have a designated spot for everything
What I mean by saying this, is that having a spot to put that note your kid brought home from school for you to sign by Friday will prevent you from just tossing it onto the table to start the paper collection that will accumulate and sit there for weeks (cause trust me, I know!). I find it much easier and less overwhelming when I’m trying to find a place for something, if I already have a designated space for that specific thing.
To take my example of a school note that needs to be returned to school by the end of the week, create a place for things like this like maybe a paper sized basket that you keep on your kitchen counter (or a room that you are in frequently) that you can keep important papers in. Then you can pick a special day of the week to go through the papers and throw out, sign and return, or pay and shred (if any of them are bills) so that they aren’t accumulating in a mess on your kitchen table.
5. Don’t let your laundry pile up
I know, I know..this one can be challenging but if you can get and stay ahead of the laundry game, it will make your home feel SO much more organized. My advice to do this is to do one load of laundry a day, whether that’s tossing a load in the washer before you leave for work in the morning or starting a load while dinner cooks, doing a load a day is totally doable! If you’re like me, it isn’t the washing part that gets you behind but the folding and putting away.
I actually love cleaning my home but if I were to be honest, the laundry is my absolute least favorite chore in my home! I would rather wash a hundred dishes than fold 3 piles of clothes (especially my kids clothes, the smaller they are the longer they take to fold it feels like). but if you are the opposite as me and maybe you love folding and putting away, then doing one load per day shouldn’t be hard for you at all!
6. Create a cleaning schedule
For me, I clean my home every day but don’t actually deep clean my home until the weekends. Creating a cleaning list for the weekends (or days you want to do a deep clean) are so beneficial to me so that I can check off things as I clean them and don’t forget about anything since I have it on my list! Plus, who doesn’t feel more accomplished after doing something by getting to check it off of your list? Cause I definitely do! You can even create a cleaning list for your every day tasks-not only for deep cleaning.
7. Tidy up right after using the kitchen
I know, after cooking and then serving food to your kids and then finally sitting down to eat yourself, the dirty dishes and putting away dinner will likely be the last thing you feel like doing. Sometimes I feel so exhausted after making dinner that I just sit around when I know I should be up cleaning the kitchen and putting the food away.
I’ve noticed that on the evenings where I procrastinate and put off cleaning my kitchen after dinner, it actually makes me cranky for the rest of the night since I’ve already messed up my nightly routine because now I’m cleaning the kitchen at 9 pm rather than when I should have. The nights when I do clean up directly after dinner, I feel much more put together and ready to do the rest of my nightly chores around the house and with the kids to get them ready for bed. So for sure, tidying up after using the kitchen vs procrastinating, is so much more beneficial!
8. Keep your countertops wiped down and mess-free
Just like keeping your floors clean, your counter tops are an important part of keeping your home looking tidy and organized. And let’s be real, wiping down the counters only takes about 5 minutes-or less so it’s totally doable! I don’t think we realize how much clutter can bog down our mental health until we clean it and feel what a difference it makes.
9. Use storage ideas like containers and baskets
This is one of my favorite and well used tips in my home. I sure do love to use storage containers for things that I am not using on a daily basis or for things like out of season clothing for my kids or for seasonal decorations. For the things that I do use on a daily basis or pretty frequently, baskets of all shapes and sizes are my favorite! I find most of mine for great prices at homegoods or TJmaxx and these work great for places like my pantry or places like my laundry room and bathrooms to hold detergents and other miscellaneous products.
10. Get your kids involved (if you have kiddos in your home)
If you don’t have any little ones in your home, then you can completely skip over this tip! But if you do have little ones running around your home, getting them on board with simple tasks like putting their shoes in their closets, putting the blocks back into the block bin after playing, or making their bed in the morning is a game changer. Of course, the older they are the more difficult tasks they can accomplish, but if you get them into the habit of cleaning up after their selves, it will help everyone out in the long run. Sometimes I tell my toddler “hey how about you pick up this area and I will pick up this area and let’s see who wins!” and it works every time (just as long as I let her win-haha).
11. Create and maintain good daily habits that play a part in keeping your home tidy and organized
I know this might seem challenging seeing how long it takes a new habit to form, but I know you can do it! If you train yourself to do the 10 tips listed above, your home will always be tidy and organized (except for the occasional when life happens moments, cause I have plenty of those) and you will have such a clearer mindset and mentality. It’s amazing how good we feel when we are living in a clean and tidy environment!
