This post is all about the most genius moving tips to make your move a breeze.
Are you moving soon and feel super stressed about packing, labeling, unpacking, and just all the things? These are my absolute best moving tips and tricks that will make any move SO much easier!
I recently did a huge move and moved states (about 5 hours away) so trust me when I tell you that these moving hacks are ones that I swear helped me so much. Even if you are moving houses that aren’t too far apart from each other or moving into a place of your own for the first time, these moving hacks have everything you need to know how to tone down the stress of moving!
These are the absolute most genius moving hacks I have ever came across. Doing these seriously helped my move to another state so much less stressful than it would have been had I not done these hacks.
THE MOST GENIUS MOVING TIPS TO MAKE YOUR MOVE A BREEZE
Moving Prep Tips
1. Declutter and Downsize
Decluttering and cleaning up your home is one of the best moving tips I can give you. Trying to pack things up whenever you still have tons of things that you don’t want to take to your new place is SO overwhelming. Go through every room in your home before your move. Get rid of anything you don’t want to take to your new place and only keep things you want to pack and take. Packing after organizing and decluttering your home is 1000% easier than trying to do it all cluttered. You’ll thank yourself later!
2. Make your Checklist!!
Before you start any kind of packing, make all the lists you need to! Make a packing checklist of everything you absolutely need so if there’s things you need to go buy, you have time before your move. Make a list of all things you need to do at your old address. Like setting up disconnects for all things in your home like utilities, garbage or recycling, internet, cable, security cameras (if you have them) and so on! I also recommend making a checklist of any last to-dos that you may need to do in preparation for your move. Lists make everything easier, I swear!
3. Gather all Your Packing Supplies
Be sure to get all of your packing supplies that you’ll need before you start the packing process. Some things that I recommend you have for packing are boxes (obviously), lots and lots of packing tape, packing paper or bubble wrap, and rugs or blankets that you can put down while you’re bringing things in and out to protect the floors.
Packing Tips and Hacks
4. Hanger and Trash Bag Hack for all Clothing
This packing hack is seriously so genius. Keeping all clothing on the hangers and just slipping them into trash bags is SO much easier than putting them into a box. This way, you can transfer all your clothing to your new closet(s) without having to rehang every single thing. How easy is that?!
5. Label All Boxes on Sides Rather Than Tops
When you are labeling what’s inside your boxes, label on the sides of the box rather than the top. This way, when boxes are stacked on top of each other, the label isn’t hidden. If you label your boxes on all the tops, you’ll have to unstack them all to see the label on the top of the box. Makes sense, right?
6. Color Code Boxes with Colored Tape or Stickers
This is one of my favorite hacks! Go buy a different color of tape for each room in your house. Make a key (showing what room each color goes to) for your memory. On the side of the box, put the color of tape to the corresponding room. This will make unpacking SO much quicker and smoother, knowing exactly what color goes where.
7. Pack a “First Night” Bag
Unloading and unpacking is already going to make you exhausted on your first day in your new home, so the last thing you need stressing you out is not having all your essentials unpacked for your first night. I highly recommend packing a box or bag that is for your first night there. This needs to have things like your toiletries, a change of clothes, snacks, drinks, and whatever else you absolutely need with everything else being still packed up. You’ll be so happy you did this!
8. Keep All Small Hardware Pieces in One Box
This one is so so important! The most frustrating thing is getting to your new place and trying to put something back together to find one of the pieces missing. MAKE SURE to keep all small screws, nails, and any other hardware pieces together in a small box. I recommend putting hardware that comes from each thing into it’s own separate Ziploc bag and then putting all the bags into a small box. This is my favorite way of making sure everything stays organized and together when you need to put things back together.
Unpacking Tips and Hacks
9. Unpack Most Important First
When unpacking, I highly recommend unpacking the essentials first before everything else. What room is the most essential for you to unpack before the others? Bathrooms and kitchen are (in my opinion) the rooms we use the most so I would def start there. Unpack all things in your bathroom and make sure you have all toiletries out and out away, then tackle the kitchen.
10. Put Boxes in the Corresponding Rooms Before Starting
This tip is super helpful! When unloading all boxes into your new place, don’t just pile all boxes into the main room. Instead, put each box into the corresponding room it goes into. If you used the color coordinating tape hack for your boxes, put a piece of the colored tape over each room so that you know exactly where each box goes. How helpful is that?! This way, when it’s time to unpack all the boxes, you aren’t going and trying to find which boxes go into which room. You’ll already have them there!
11. Stay Organized and Tidy While Unpacking
I know this can be hard, especially when there are boxes everywhere and you feel overwhelmed. But as you are unpacking each box, be sure to put it where it goes and not just on the floor or counters just so that it’s “unpacked.” This will make you feel even more overwhelmed. Put things exactly in their place even if it takes more time or effort. You’ll be so happy you did this!
12. Unpack Room by Room
Unpacking room by room is so much easier than trying to unpack multiple rooms at once. I would start with the kitchen since it’s usually the most tedious and difficult, and get that room out of the way. Once you have the kitchen unpacked, move onto another room. Make a rule that you aren’t going to move onto another room until you are finished with the room you’re in. This works so well at staying organized with your unpacking!
13. Don’t Let Empty Boxes Pile Up
After you empty a box, be sure to fold or break it down and start a designated pile for your empty boxes. If you don’t fold or break them down as you unpack, you will get overwhelmed SUPER quick having so many empty boxes around. Tearing or folding your boxes down as you unpack is really important for you to stay tidy and less stressed when unpacking. Once you have all boxes unpacked, then you can take them to recycling (or whatever you wanna do with them!) all at the same time. And then you’re all done!

I hope these moving tips and hacks really helped you. Whether you are moving now, or are planning to soon, these tips are seriously golden for a stress-free move! I know moving in general can seriously be so so stressful, so use these tips to your advantage and help make your move a breeze..you got this!!
